Main Organ

Wien-Schottenbasilika, Chororgel

Wien-Schottenbasilika, Chororgel

In the course of a major renovation of the church by the architect Kurt Schlauss in the years 1992-94 the convent authority approved the construction of two new organs for the liturgy of the mass that were to be a central feature of the musical cultural activities of the capital of Austria. Upon completion of comprehensive canvassing in the summer of 1992 eight organ building companies from three nations were invited to submit bids. Mathis Orgelbau was subsequently awarded the contract and was first commissioned to build a new Choir Organ (II-P/20) which was dedicated in 1994. Following the example of the historic choir organ in Einsiedeln the instrument was built with twin cases: the console and the stops of the Great as Epistle organ and the Swell and the Pedal as Gospel organ.
